Using Newspapers for your research

Newspapers provide a snapshot of how history unfolded and how people viewed an event at the time it happened. Though they are often biased and may not tell the full story, newspapers can be useful primary sources to include in your research as long as you treat them as only one among many viewpoints and combine them with other sources.

This guide will point you to the major digital newspaper databases that the UNM Libraries subscribe to, as well as a few online news sites. Be aware that some historical newspapers are only available on microfilm. You can search for them in the library catalog and locate the reels in the Government Documents section in the basement of Zimmerman Library.
