Kick off spring semester with this fun series!

This winter, the University Libraries will welcome Lobos back to campus with a series of fun events. Start the new semester by reconnecting with friends over science fiction. From alternate histories to dystopias and from cyberpunk to space opera, we invite the campus community to celebrate science fiction and have some fun during these socially distanced times.

If you’re already a dedicated Trekker, Whovian, Browncoat, Gater, X-phile or another type of science-fiction fan, we would love for you to share your enthusiasm.

But even if you have never given the genre much thought before, now is a great time to explore how the stories we tell about possible futures – from the realistic to the fanciful – allow us to ask questions about how our choices shape the world and how we can create a better one.

The 2023 theme is...

La Frontera Final: Latinx Science Fiction

This year, University Libraries has partnered with Professor Matthew David Goodwin (UNM Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies) to center the science-fiction works of Latinx creators. Dr. Goodwin is the author of The Latinx Files: Race, Migration, and Space Aliens, the editor of Latinx Rising, and the co-editor of Speculative Fiction for Dreamers.

His work on Latinx literature and culture examines how science fiction, fantasy, and digital culture have been used to express the experience of migration, and being bi-cultural or multi-racial.

  • The Movie Watch Party will showcase a Spanish-language film by Puerto Rican director Carla Cavina. Dr. Goodwin selected this title, and he will lead a discussion of the film after the screening.
  • For the book discussion, we will read a science-fiction short story collection by Cuban author Yoss.
  • The team trivia game will feature an entire category of questions about Latinx science fiction, the works, the artists, and more!

Show us your cosplay!

Fun costumes are encouraged at all three events. Also, you can share fun photos of yourself, your family, or your pets dressed up as your favorite science fiction character with the library on Twitter or Instagram (@unmlibraries). Remember to use #unmscifi. We can't wait to see your creativity!

Thank you
