Dean Leo Lo Assumes Role as 2024 ACRL President

phot of Dean Leo LoThe College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) is proud to announce that Dean Leo Lo, has assumed the role of President of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) for a one-year term. Leo Lo is the first Asian American president of ACRL. 

ACRL, with over 7,200 members, is the leading association for academic libraries, empowering higher education professionals to learn, innovate, and lead in the ever-evolving landscape of scholarly research, access to information, and student success. Dean Lo has been an integral member of ACRL for 14 years, demonstrating his dedication and leadership through numerous roles within the association. His contributions include serving as co-chair of the ACRL President's Program Planning Committee (2021-2023), chair of the ACRL College and Research Library News Editorial Board (2021-2023), vice-chair of the ACRL Publications Coordinating Committee (2022-2023), and participation in various other committees. His extensive involvement underscores his commitment and expertise in the field of academic librarianship.

“ACRL is pleased to welcome Dr. Leo Lo as President of the ACRL Board of Directors. Both members and the profession will benefit greatly from Dr. Lo’s deep knowledge of academic librarianship—especially his expertise of AI and libraries. I look forward to working with Dr. Lo in the coming year,” said Allison Payne, ACRL Interim Executive Director.

Beyond his work with ACRL, Dean Lo has made significant contributions to state, regional, and national associations. His expertise is highly sought after on various committees, advisory boards, and working groups, further establishing his influence and leadership in the field.

Since joining UNM as Dean and Professor of CULLS in September 2021, Dean Lo has overseen over 120 full-time faculty and staff. He provides leadership for all University Libraries operations, the Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences (OILS) programs, and the UNM Press.

Reflecting on his journey with ACRL, Dean Lo shared, "I joined ACRL when I was a library school student and have been active in the association ever since. It’s no exaggeration to say that ACRL has played a critical role in my career, igniting my passion for learning and growth, and providing so many opportunities for me to do so. I value the sense of learning and growth opportunities, leadership, and friendship that ACRL provides, and truly appreciate the role the organization has played in my personal and professional journey."
