Off-campus Resources for High School Students

Librarian's advice for research skills

UNM librarians have put together a collection of research skills tutorials especially geared to early undergraduates. These research skills apply to advanced high school students, though, and will give you a head start if you've got your sights set on college!

Please note that you will not have login access to some of the material referenced in the Bytes until you become a UNM Lobo. =)

Of the 13 Research Bytes, we recommend these for advanced high school students:

  • 1. Finding Background Information
  • 5. Wikipedia, Google, and the library
  • 7. Narrowing Searches
  • 8. Refining Topics
  • 9. Reading Scholarly Articles

Research is...

A creation. You are creating a whole new piece of knowledge to add to the world. It's very likely that there is no "perfect source" that will give you all the knowledge you need for your paper. You must weave lots of sources together to make your creation. We need your critical thinking and your creation to help change the world.
