Chicana and Chicano Collections (Archival)

Contained in this small collection is correspondence between Darby Strong, then doctoral candidate at University of New Mexico, and Argentine author Raúl Larra. The majority of the correspondence is in Spanish, although some has been translated into English by Strong. The letters usually revolve around questions that Strong had about the literature of Larra or his personal history and influences. Often times, the conversation and questions deal with Latin American politics and the use of Marx by Latin American intellectuals. In addition to the letters, there are also significant numbers of press clippings and essays about Larra, as well as essays, short stories and copies of two novels written by Larra. These materials are almost exclusively in Spanish, although, like the letters, Strong has trans­lated some of Larra’s writing into English for use in his English-language dissertation.

The collection contains typescripts of 7 of Ulibarrí’s short stories. Materials such as correspondence, program brochures, and news clippings highlight Sabine Ulibarrí’s involvements, achievements, and awards. Events represented include Ulibarrí’s founding of the University of New Mexico’s Andean Center in Ecuador (1967-68), a poetry recital in Guadalajara, Mexico (1971), and the Sabine R. Uli­barrí Symposium and tertulia at the University of New Mexico (1988). The collection also documents Sabine Ulibarrí receiving the 1987 Governor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts. Materials relating to various miscellaneous events can also be found in this collection.

This collection consists of photos, book and newspaper publications, and family, political, and business documents relating to the Ibarra family and Venezuela. The collection documents the personal, social, and political life of the Ibarra family and its associates in 18th, 19th and 20th century South America.

Zapatismo formerly known as The Chiapas Committee, was an organization founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico to support indigenous rights and autonomy in Chiapas, Mexico. Zapatismo worked in coordination with human rights observers and other non-governmental organizations in support of the autonomous, indigenous pueblos of Chiapas by sending U.S. delegations to Chiapas, Mexico. In addition, its efforts included hosting guest speakers and women from Chiapas and holding classes and discussion groups in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Zapatismo also organized appearances on Community Cable Channel 27, weekly vigils in front of the Albuquerque Mexican Consulate, letter writing campaigns and fund raisers.
