Historical Maps in the Map and Geographic Information Center

MAGIC has many historic maps scattered throughout the collection, but it also houses a number of specific historic map collections:

Historic Southwestern Maps

This collection is mostly maps of New Mexico, the Southwest and western United States, with a few maps of the world or other various places in the world. Some are original maps and some are facsimile reproductions, with dates ranging from the late 1400's to the early 1900's.

Historic USGS Topographic Maps

Early topographic maps from the late 1800's to 1940 for various states, including New Mexico

Navajo Nation Maps

Various maps of the Navajo Reservation from the late 1800's to present.

Plat Maps of New Mexico

Partial coverage of the General Land Office cadastral survey maps for the state of New Mexico, from the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Road Maps of New Mexico

Road maps for the state of New Mexico done by the New Mexico State Highway Department or various oil companies such as Shell or Conoco. Dates range from pre-statehood to present.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of New Mexico

The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are maps of buildings that were used for underwriting fire insurance. They detail construction material, windows, staircases etc. The Sanborn maps are now used for historic research of buildings and neighborhoods. Various towns and cities in New Mexico were mapped from 1891 to 1957.
