Undergraduate Research Instructor Resources

Introduction

In 2017, the state of New Mexico passed legislation that mandates general education courses focus on five essential skills. One of those essential skills is information literacy. In the Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, the Association of College and Research Libraries defines information literacy as "the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning."

Key lessons that fall under the umbrella of information literacy can scaffold UGR experiences and enhance their effectiveness. These include:

  • Source evaluation
  • Conducting an effective literature review
  • Peer review process
  • Finding a publication venue/predatory journals
  • Respecting copyright with images in scholarly work
  • Creative and resilient searching
  • Examining science claims in the news
  • Exploring misinformation/disinformation on the web

On this tab, you can find literature and other resources that can help you blend information literacy education into your UGR projects.
