PopUp Politico! A Display for the Election Season (Zimmerman Lobby)

by Liz Cooper on 2016-10-19T10:02:00-06:00 in Political Science | 0 Comments

The Zimmerman lobby features a new display, PopUp Politico, in recognition of the 2016 election season. The display is an effort to call attention to our unique collections, highlight new online resources, and invite participation in project undertaken by the journalists at New Mexico In Depth, which examines money and politics.

Part I - Donate Your Election Fliers!

Library staff are assisting with the Follow the Message project led by the award-winning journalism resource New Mexico In Depth. NMID data journalist Sandra Fish is gathering Election 2016 messages received by prospective voters, compiling information about those messages, and creating a searchable database, to include information about who paid for the message.

We hope that library staff and library visitors will contribute by bringing in the election and campaign materials you receive in the mail and depositing them in the mailbox that is mounted as part of the display in the Zimmerman lobby. Library staff will clear out the box as needed, redact any personal information on mailers, photograph the materials, and submit them to Fish for her project. Any un-needed material will be recycled.

Part II - Marvel at Historic Election Ephemera!!

The Center for Southwest Research holds rich collections of historic New Mexico (and broader) political campaign and election materials. A small sampling is mounted on the display board in the lobby, along with information about the collections of which those materials are part.

Part III - Get Informed & Involved!!!

The display features a new UNM Library created Election Research Guide with links to information about candidates for office, issues on the ballot, fact-checking resources (to research all those election messages), and much more...
