University Libraries is launching its Menstrual Equity Pilot Project, a new initiative designed to provide free menstrual products to the campus community. Beginning this semester, products will be available in select bathrooms throughout Zimmerman Library, with daily restocking to ensure accessibility.
This project is made possible through funding from the UNM Student Fee Review Board (SFRB), demonstrating the University’s commitment to student health and well-being. The initiative focuses on high-traffic bathrooms near lobbies and stairwell landings, providing convenient access to essential products for those who need them.
“We are committed to supporting the health and well-being of our campus community,” said Amy Jackson, University Libraries associate dean. “The Menstrual Equity Pilot Project is a crucial step toward addressing the often-overlooked burden carried by people who menstruate. Thanks to funding from the Student Fee Review Board, we are able to provide free menstrual products in select restrooms in Zimmerman Library. This initiative reduces barriers to access, alleviates unnecessary stress, and promotes a more equitable and inclusive environment for all students, staff, and visitors.”
Menstrual equity is a vital part of creating an inclusive campus environment. Access to free products can alleviate the financial burden of menstruation and reduce stress for students balancing academic and personal responsibilities. According to the ACLU, “nearly one in five American Teenagers who live in poverty, lack of menstrual products and support can lead to lost educational opportunity.”
The University Libraries team hopes that this pilot project will pave the way for expanded access in the future. The UNM community is encouraged to provide feedback on this initiative to help guide future decisions and improve accessibility.
