University Libraries Announces Winners of 2022 Library Research Award

As the leading research institute in New Mexico, UNM strives to recognize its student and faculty research initiatives. The University Libraries is a proud supporter of this and is happy to announce the winners of the 2022 Jim and Mary Lois Friday Hulsman Undergraduate Library Research Awards. Three recipients were selected for each category: Emerging Researcher and Advanced Researcher.

This prestigious award aims to shine a light on both emerging and advanced research in undergraduates. The award accepts original research projects completed by individuals or groups in all formats including, research papers, design portfolios, compositions, posters, and digital projects.

All recipients will receive a cash prize and their research will be added to the UNM Digital Repository. You can read more about each student and their research at the 2022 Hulsman Award website.

Emerging Researcher Category:

  • First Place – Hevyn L. Heckes, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (and Children) – A Global Problem
  • Second Place – Colin M. Rankine, Asin Yahola's Wife
  • Third Place – Haley G. Hughes, Mental Illness and Human Dignity in Jane Eyre

Advanced Researcher Category:

  • Firs Place – Etienne G. Allred, SOE and its Contribution to the Allied War Effort during the Second World War
  • Second Place – Mikenzie E. Chessman, Bubonic Plague: Public Health Warnings from an Ancient Disease
  • Third Place – Katherine Atkinson, The Art of War

The Jim and Mary Lois Friday Hulsman Undergraduate Library Research Award program recognizes excellence in undergraduate research that incorporates the use of the University Libraries resources and demonstrates sophisticated information literacy skills. The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences would like to thank the judges, committee members, and the Hulsman for their support of the award program.
