The University Libraries (UL) receives thousands of visitors throughout the year and is proud to provide many resources and services to the UNM and broader Albuquerque communities. Campus security is a priority at The University of New Mexico and University Libraries is proactively working to ensure the safety of all visitors. Soon, this will be reflected in new turnstiles and updated security gates at the entrances of all main campus libraries: Centennial Science & Engineering Library (CSEL), Fine Arts & Design Library (FADL), and Zimmerman Library.

The goal of the new system is to improve safety for everyone using library spaces, while simultaneously increasing protection of library collections. This project is part of a broader initiative funded by UNM to improve safety on campus while maintaining access to facilities, resources, and services.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, after the spring semester and continue through the end of July. All three libraries will remain open during construction and installation. In addition to the turnstiles and security gates, new cameras will be installed within the libraries.

“Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment to our campus community as well as the many visitors and scholars who come to University Libraries,” said Leo Lo, dean of College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences.

UNM students, faculty, and staff will use their UNM LoboCard to swipe in and enter the library. The new turnstile system will be similar to other facilities on campus.

Individuals without a UNM LoboCard or a UL Community Borrower’s Card may enter after checking in with staff at the desks located near the turnstiles and providing a government-issued photo ID. Visitors who have purchased a Community Borrower’s Card will have expedited access in the new system.

The new system will include an ADA-compliant swing gate and will also have the capability to allow group access such as campus tours.

In the event of an emergency, the system is connected with the fire alarm systems within libraries and will be designed to permit safe and immediate exit.
