Cindy Pierard, director of access service and undergraduate engagement in the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS), has been selected by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Leadership Fellows Program.
The program, established in 2004, develops and prepares the next generation of senior-level library and archival leaders. Only 20 fellows were selected for this year’s cohort, representing a broad range of U.S. and Canadian research institutions and communities. Pierard is the first from The University of New Mexico to be selected for the distinguished program.
“I am excited to participate in this program during a time of significant challenge and change for research and learning organizations,” said Pierard. “This is a great opportunity to contribute to discussions about research library development and to learn from and with others in the cohort and at ARL."
Pierard joined CULLS in 2014. As director of access service and undergraduate engagement, Pierard and her team help campus and community users access resources, services, and spaces and engage with information and ideas. Access Services holds responsibility for access and reference/information services; resource sharing and delivery services; and stewardship of UNM’s physical library collections, including those to be housed at the University Libraries’ new high-density storage facility, the South Campus Repository. The group helps to develop and manage learning and creative spaces in the libraries, such as the Adobe Creative Commons, a new space under development with UNM Information Technologies. They also support engagement through student-focused programs and displays. In 2018, the Indigenous Nations Library Program (INLP) joined the Access Services group. INLP supports Indigenous learning, promotes Indigenous scholarship, and cultivates Indigenous creativity, carrying out its mission through culturally relevant spaces and services.
As special assistant to the dean for disaster response and recovery, Pierard also leads and coordinates activities of the CULLS Disaster Response and Assistance Team and supports overall preparedness and response activities.
“It’s an honor for the College to have Cindy as our first ever librarian to be selected for this highly competitive and prestigious executive leadership program,” said CULLS Dean Leo Lo. “She will be learning with an impressive cohort as well as gaining insight into the leadership of a number of ARL libraries. I look forward to seeing Cindy bring back new ideas and apply them to help us achieve the College’s vision.”
Pierard’s previous experience includes public services positions at New Mexico State University and the University of Kansas.
