The University Libraries invites all student artists connected to UNM to submit mural proposals for a wall in the Parish Memorial Library. Parish Memorial Library (PML) focuses on business and economics and provides a range of resources, services, and study spaces to UNM students. It is located on Las Lomas between University House and the Anderson School of Management (map link). The winning muralist will paint the design on a wall in the basement of PML, which has many skylights providing natural light and is popular with students to gather and study. The intention of the artwork is to draw people to the Parish Memorial Library as a place for inspiration as they gather, study, and reflect.

The Parish Library Mural project committee will select the winner – individual or team. The winning artist or team will receive a $750 honorarium and up to $500 for supplies. The artist may select one of 4 designated walls in the library for the mural. It is ideal for students to visit PML to view these walls in situ prior to submitting a proposal. The selected artist will paint the mural during the summer of 2018. This project is for an impermanent mural, with a minimum lifetime of three years. The selected mural will be documented (artist’s notes, statements, photographs, etc.) with the documentation retained in the University Libraries’ digital archive which is available to the public.

The artist(s) will also be publicly recognized* by the library via its various news venues (e.g. web sites, blog post).

Submission Requirements

Themes: Capitalize on the PML collection of business and economics (writ large) OR highlight the landscapes, peoples, and cultures of New Mexico.

Eligibility: This call is open to all currently enrolled UNM students (undergraduate & graduate) in good standing as defined by the ASUMN Constitution. An individual student or a team (all members in good standing) may submit a proposal.

*All artists must be willing to participate in publicity and attend a reception celebrating the completion of the project.
