Jon Hunner is a longtime historian of New Mexico and the Atomic West. He earned his B.A. from St. John’s College in Santa Fe and his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, and has taught at New Mexico State University since 1995. He is also active in preserving local history and heritage through his research and writing, and by serving on many boards and committees in New Mexico, nationally, and internationally.

In honor of the 2016 National Parks 100th anniversary, Hunner drove 20,000 miles across the nation searching for places where history actually happened - from, 2,000 years ago to the 1950s and 1960s. In his March 1 presentation in the Waters Room in Zimmerman Library, he will share his visits to many of our National Parks, with particular focus on Native American pre-contact sites, on the path of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery, and on the Civil Rights Trail across the country.

The Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections has displayed, in front of the Waters Room, a few selected photos and brochures from the archives about the New Mexico National Parks.
