Celebrate International Education Week @ University Libraries!

International Education Week (IEW)November 13th through 17th, starts today!    

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate world cultures, people, and language while affirming the critical role that international exchange and education play in fostering mutual understanding. Inaugurated by President Clinton in 2000, IEW is a joint initiative by the US Department of State and the Department of Education and is celebrated annually in more than 100 countries across the world to symbolize the importance of cross-cultural learning.

Academic libraries have always played a vital role contributing to campus internationalization through our collections and services. This year the UNM Libraries are collaborating with UNM’s Global Education Office (GEO) to plan and host campus events for IEW.  All library events will be listed on the Library calendar, the UNM calendar, and the GEO IEW calendar. Come celebrate with us!

Highlights of Library IEW Events include:

Monday, 11/13, 12-1:30

  • Global Translate, Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, SUB Atrium
    • Global Translate is a GEO sponsored event highlighting language and culture. The Library is participating by hosting an internationally themed Wiki Edit-a-thon. Stop by and use your travel experience to improve the free travel guide WikiVoyage. Or, put your language skills to use in translating Wikipedia across your choice of languages.

Wednesday, 11/15

  • GIS Day, SUB Atrium, 9-2
    • An international forum for users of geographic information systems GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. - GISday.com The event at the University is co-hosted by Earth Data Analysis Center, Student Association of Geography and Environmental Studies, Dept. of Geography Environmental Studies, Centennial Science & Engineering Library, and Global Education Office
  • GIS Day Workshops, CSEL DEN 2
    • GIS Background Concepts & Overview, 9:00 AM
      • This workshop will focus on the foundation concepts of GIS: spatial data types, coordinate systems, accuracy and precision in geospatial data, commonly used geospatial data formats, and tools. GIS capabilities will then be demonstrated in both ArcGIS and QGIS.
    • VR Open Lab, 10:00 AM
      • This open lab session is planned to let users become acquainted with VR applications and capabilities, with a particular focus on virtual Earth exploration through Google Earth and 3d modeling in VR through design applications.
    • Geospatial Data Sources and Services in Support of Visualization and Analysis, 11:00 AM
      • This workshop will focus on regional, national, and international geospatial data sources and services. Types of data covered will include environmental and socioeconomic data that are explicitly geospatial or are made available in formats that facilitate straightforward integration with reference geospatial data. Core geospatial data and map service concepts will also be introduced as an alternative strategy for bringing hosted data into desktop and web applications
  • International Short Film Festival, Waters Room, 11-12:30   Drop in and watch a variety of award-winning international short films. Feel free to bring your lunch! Films include:
    • Bikini: A Real Story (17 minutes)
      • The mayor of a small town in Spain tries to convince the authorities to allow women to wear bikinis on beaches in the 1950 s.
    • The Coda (9 minutes)
      • A lost soul stumbles drunkenly through the city. In a park, Death finds him and shows him many things. A beautiful animated short film from Ireland.
    • Ave Maria (15 minutes)
      • An Israeli settler family crash their car outside an isolated convent in the occupied West Bank. Their only hope of getting home rests with five nuns who have taken a vow of silence. Academy Award Nominee in 2016.
    • La Femme et le TGV (30 minutes).
      • A lonely woman who keeps a secret routine every morning and evening -- for years, she's been waving at the express train that passes by her house. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.
  • Virtual Reality World Tours, CSEL DEN, 1-5
    • Centennial Library invites the UNM community on a free world tour through virtual reality VR! Now is your chance to explore the streets of Berlin, the Great Wall of China, the geological wonders of Iceland, and the jungles of South America all in a single afternoon. Join us for guided tours through locations around the world using Google Earth VR, as well as get the chance to virtually explore on your own. VR is a great way to get a sense of a new place before you travel, revisit old haunts, or simply fuel your wanderlust!

There will also be exhibits in Zimmerman, Parish, and FADL highlighting international collections and Parish Library student workers are creating some exciting internationally themed photo op boards!
