Peter Ives loves a good map

Peter Ives is a proud UNM alum who began working at Parish Memorial Library in 1984, where he served as a Librarian for 25 years. During our interview, he recalled, it was an exciting time to be a part of the Business and Economics Library, particularly since those departments experienced an increase in enrollment at that time. Throughout his career, he generously contributed his time and energy to the University of New Mexico. Now that he has retired he continues to give back through his support for the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections.
Ives has a background in geography and history; he ran the map collection at UNM for several years and greatly values the intellectual resources offered by maps. Those experiences, coupled with his passion for the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences, inspired him to leave his mark by donating rare maps to the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections.
“Everywhere you go in the world, there are different kinds of libraries and they all preserve memories of human kind. The library provides a place where people can go and access information. Maps have a tremendous amount of intellectual content. Part of the reason why I like maps is because they can sometimes tell us a story that explains why things are the way they are. Buildings, transportation, people, culture, etc. The maps that I’m helping purchase allow scholars to learn about the Southwest.”
We are incredibly grateful to Peter Ives for his ongoing support of the University of New Mexico, both through his work and his contributions. He enthusiastically encourages others to give back to UNM, and to consider making a donation, “Ask yourself what you are trying to accomplish and what areas you are passionate about.” Together we can make a difference by supporting UNM’s College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences. We are proud to be the only college on campus whose mission impacts all UNM students and thank the generous supporters in our community who make our work possible.
