From Monstrous Love Stories, by Liz Mayorga

The Center for Southwest Research has a collection of Chicano Latino Comics and Zines, 1993-2017, MSS 1015 BC.  Artists featured in the collection include Javier Hernández, Crystal González, Octavio Rodríguez, Carlos Saldaña, Liz Mayorga, José Cabrera, and Rafael Navarro.

Shown are examples of the work of Liz Mayorga, whose stories and drawings are often about class, identity, survival, popular culture, love, dating, dreams and horror.

Mayorga is an illustrator and writer, who first started drawing as a kid growing up in Southeast Los Angeles.  A working class artist, she was raised in her parent's restaurant.  For her, art was a way to connect to her Mexican roots.  She moved to the Bay Area for college, creates comics and zines and directed the San Francisco Zine Fest from 2012-2015.

Another piece by Mayorga is called A Caxcan Guerrilla Takes Over the Awkward Girl, 2011.  She said she named it “for the Caxcan tribe of indigenous people that were in her Mom and Dad's hometown of El Teul, in Zacatecas.”
