Five CULLS Faculty members receive Promotion and Tenure

The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) is excited to share the accomplishments of the five faculty members who have received promotion and tenure last month. All five faculty members have been promoted to associate professor. 

Stephanie Beene, Fine Arts Librarian – Learning and Outreach Services  

As the Art, Architecture, and Planning Librarian at UNM, Stephanie Beene supports the teaching, learning, and research of students and faculty within the Art Department in the College of Fine Arts and the School of Architecture and Planning. This means that she teaches students visual and information literacy concepts in workshops and library instruction sessions, in coordination with disciplinary faculty or as a component of our library instruction and outreach services. She strives to meet the needs of UNM's students and faculty, especially in the creative disciplines! She has worked as an educator, librarian, and visual resources curator in libraries, archives, museums, and galleries, and her research interests include visual and information literacy frameworks as they relate to trust, lifelong learning, and the politics of identity. Beene received an MS in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, a Masters in Art History from the University of California, Riverside, and a Bachelors in Art and Art History from Colorado State University. Before coming to UNM, she worked as a Visual Resources and Arts Librarian at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

 

David Hurley, Discovery & Web Librarian 

David Hurley joined the University Libraries’ in 2015 as a visiting lecturer teaching information literacy. Since 2017, he has been the discovery and web librarian and head of the library’s user experience group. David’s research interests include cultural humility, human interaction with library and information systems, and information literacy. Before coming to the University of New Mexico, David worked at the State Library of New Mexico, the Public Library of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, and the Diné College Libraries. He studied library and information science at the University of Washington’s Information School. 

 

image of Laura Kohl outside. Laura Kohl, Principal Cataloger – Technical Services

Laura Kohl is the Principal Cataloger and head of the cataloging unit within the Technical Services Department at UNM’s College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences. She received her BA in History from the University of New Mexico and her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh, where she specialized in Archival Science. Prior to joining UNM, Laura worked in museums as both an Archivist and a Cataloger. She was the lead cataloger for the New Mexico History Museum’s Historic Maps of New Mexico Project supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Laura has extensive experience in the cataloging of special collections, authority control, collection management, library preservation, and archival encoding. Her publications include journal articles and book chapters on topics ranging from cataloging to workflow within libraries. Laura is also passionate about animal rescue and has volunteered with the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department for the last 9 years. Her community service has been recognized by her peers resulting in multiple nominations for UNM’s Sarah Belle Brown Community Service Award in 2018 and 2020.

 

 

Oleksandr “Alex” Tkachenko - Organization, Information, & Learning Sciences (OILS) Associate Professor 
Oleksandr “Alex” Tkachenko holds a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development (HRD) with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota, USA. Oleksandr is a native of Ukraine. In 2004-2006, Oleksandr was a recipient of the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship of the United States Department of State. Oleksandr also holds an M.A. degree in Comparative and International Development Education from the University of Minnesota, USA. In OILS, Oleksandr teaches HRD courses for master’s and doctoral students. His research interests include workplace learning, leadership, positive organizational behavior, and international HRD. He published his research in such journals as Human Resource Development Review, Journal of Management & Organization, European Journal of Training and Development, Team Performance Management, Journal of Workplace Learning, and Human Resource Development International.

image of Jonathan WheelerJonathan Wheeler,  Data Curation Librarian

Jon Wheeler has been with the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences since 2012. As the Data Curation Librarian within the College's Research Data Services unit, Jon supports researchers in the development and execution of data management plans, and the sharing and preservation of research data. Since 2018, Jon has also led the New Mexico Cyberinfrastructure Training program, a workforce development component of the NSF-funded NM EPSCoR SMART Grid Center. In this role, he coordinates data science education initiatives throughout the state in collaboration with the state EPSCoR office and the Software and Data Carpentry organizations. Jon's research interests include the automation of data curation workflows, and the development of methods to better assess the impact of open access institutional repositories.
