What is ArcGIS?

ArcGIS (Geographical information system) is software used for creating/ viewing maps, compiling geographic data, sharing/ discovering geographic information, and managing a range of geographic databases.  

The system provides an infrastructure for making maps and geographic information available openly on the Web.
