Information on the University Libraries' reserves services

Course Reserves Services

To support student learning the University Libraries provide assistance in developing a Reserve Collection to provide students access to materials needed for their courses. These services include both hard copy items, such as books and DVD's and electronic materials such as articles and e-books.

  • Reserve requests usually take 2-4 days to process.
  • They can be submitted in advance, 2-3 weeks ensures that they are processed and ready for the first day of classes.
  • Instructors are encouraged to notify the University Libraries as soon as they decide they would like to use an item for reserve.
  • If an item is checked out, we will request that the user return the item as soon as possible, but it does cause a delay.

Hard Copy Reserves owned by the University Libraries

An instructor may request a library-owned item to be placed on hard copy reserve at any branch. By notifying the University Libraries that an item is needed for a course it can be shelved the service desk area and made available for a shorter check out time.

Items typically check out for:

  • 2 hours
  • 1 day
  • 3 days
  • Other arrangements may be made with the Reserve Specialist at each branch

Instructors can notify reserve specialists about requested reserves through two methods:

  • Submitting a Hardcopy Reserve Request Form to a Library Service Desk
  • Submitting a Hardcopy Reserve Request Form via email.

Ideally, instructors will submit the forms with the accompanying item.

  • This allows for the instructor to be certain the item is currently available.
  • If the item is checked out or missing they will be able to make any necessary substitutions or adjustments to the teaching schedule.
  • Pulling items from the collection adds extra processing time.

Personal Copies on Reserve

Since the University Libraries are unable to purchase every book possible needed for a course, we encourage instructors to being in their personal or department copies. This is especially true for textbooks.

  • We will facilitate adding them to the reserve collection for your students to use.
  • They will be returned at the end of the semester.
  • These items will also check out for the same amount of time as other reserves and take the same amount of time to process.

Scanning & Persistent URL Locator Services

The University Libraries is also able to assist in making electronic content available to students.

  • If the University Libraries have electronic access to an article, chapter, or other item you wish to use in your course and we are able to provide you with a durable link or persistent URL for that item. Linking to online resources provides the University Libraries with valuable data so we can better understand the use and value of our electronic resources.
  • If we do not have access to the item electronically and determine that use of the material is in compliance with copyright law, staff will scan and email the item for you so you are able to add it to your Learn course. Please see the copyright information included with the request form for additional information.

Please submit all completed Scanning / Persistent URL Request Forms to Zimmerman Library Service Desk. Requests may take up to 2-4 days to process.
