Patents and Trademarks

The University of New Mexico is the Patent and Trademark Depository for the state of New Mexico.  We can help you search the patent and trademark databases in order to determine that your idea is unique.  We also help with questions about the application process.  We are not premitted to do any of the application procedures for you, nor to give you legal advice.  The P & T Library is physically housed at the Centennial Science and Engineering Library.  If this is your first time searching patents or trademarks, I recommend reading though this page.  If you already understand the search process you can link to the United States Patent and Trademark Web Site at uspto.gov directly.

Before searching patents

If you are doing a patent search for the first time, it pays to do a complete search by using the class/subclases as opposed to simple keyword searching.  Try one of these tutorials before you start.
