History

The Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections (CSWR) specializes in interdisciplinary subjects relating to New Mexico, the Southwestern U.S., Mexico and Latin America, as well as rare materials from around the world. Our strengths include Native American, Chicano/Hispano, Latin American, Spanish Colonial, and environmental history, plus a wide range of locally published and archival materials documenting the region

The Latin American Collections represent the strongest single area of the library print materials with nearly 600,000 books in English, Portuguese and Spanish. A small but growing collection of sources in Latin American indigenous languages supplements these holdings, which are spread across all libraries at UNM.

This collection consists of photographs of African-American soldiers, known as Buffalo Soldiers, from the 24th Infantry, based at Columbus, N.M., January 20, 1918. The photos show soldiers at rifle and machine gun practice, at chow line, at attention, etc.

Designed to facilitate research about New Mexico's past, cultural heritage materials from 12 New Mexico institutions are available here for study and research. Materials include photographs, documents, maps, posters, art, music and video.

New Mexico Digital Collections is a central search portal for digital collections about New Mexico. It provides access to digitized photographs, manuscripts, posters, oral histories, videos, maps, and books from libraries, museums, and cultural centers across the state.
