We are delighted to share the news that Stephanie Akau, library infomation specialist, has been named one of the American Library Association’s 2018-2019 Spectrum Scholars.

Since 1997, ALA has awarded over 1,000 Spectrum Scholarships to exceptional students who are pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies. Scholars are selected based on their commitment to equity and inclusion, their demonstrated community outreach, and their commitment to the library profession, academic achievements and leadership potential.

Akau is pursuing her MLIS at the San Jose State University School of Information and anticipates attaining her degree in 2019. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in clarinet performance/music education cognate from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Music in clarinet performance from Michigan State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education (Summa Cum Laude) from UNM. Stephanie also has rich work experience with positions in libraries, archives, education, museums, and fine arts organizations.

Unfortunately, we can’t celebrate this with Stephanie in person—at least not yet—as she is currently in Washington, D.C., where she is participating in the Junior Fellows Summer Internship Program at the Library of Congress (Music Division). This is yet another highly competitive program for which she has been selected.
